AUTEUR CRITICISM: M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN

Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan or known as M. Night Shyamalan is a part of auteur director which he inserts his individual style in all his films. M. Night Shyamalan is also an auteur director known for his style of mystical elements and breath-taking twists. That is the reason why, his style is well expressed through his films and most of his stories usually focus on thriller type of genre. Some of M. Night Shyamalan films that earned auteur reputation are such as ' The Sixth Sense ', ' The Village ', and ' The Visit '.

M. Night Shyamalan always makes his films with the same ‘jump scare’ and mystery sound effect that makes his film more interesting. Morever, M. Night Shyamalan does not have any collaborators with the same artist or cast in his film, but he did have the collaboration with the other producers and composers in many of his films such as Sam Mercer and James Newton Howard. Based on my observation, in the terms of mise – en – scene, I identified that M. Night Shyamalan always use a low-key lightning in his film and the setting of the films were also in Philadelphia. This proves that M. Night Shyamalan is indeed an auteur director.
